About PetInsureLab

About PetInsureLab

PetInsureLab is an independent educational publication focused on a single narrow topic: pet insurance for dogs and cats in the United States. Our mission is to help American pet owners read a policy sample, understand what is and is not covered, and reach an informed decision before enrolling in any pet insurance plan. We do not sell insurance, we do not recommend specific carriers, and we do not run lead-generation funnels.

What we cover

The site is intentionally narrow. Every article on PetInsureLab addresses one of the following six topic areas:

  • Dog Insurance — coverage structure, claims experience, and cost factors for U.S. dog owners.
  • Cat Insurance — the same coverage questions for U.S. cat owners, with emphasis on the chronic conditions cats are most likely to develop later in life.
  • Plan Basics — cross-species explainers covering deductibles, reimbursement percentages, annual limits, waiting periods, and exclusions.
  • Senior & Pre-Existing — what realistic coverage looks like for senior pets and how the pre-existing conditions clause works across U.S. carriers.
  • Wellness & Routine Care — preventive-care add-ons, dental coverage, and when the routine-care rider actually delivers value.
  • Cost & Comparison — average monthly cost ranges, the variables that drive pricing, and multi-pet discount mechanics.

We deliberately do not cover exotic pet insurance, international markets, pet food, training, or services unrelated to the core insurance topic. A small, deeply-covered set of subjects serves our readers better than a broad surface that tries to be everything.

Who we are

PetInsureLab is written by a small editorial team with a mix of veterinary clinic, insurance industry, and registered veterinary technician backgrounds. Our contributors are:

  • Dr. Megan Sutter, DVM-equivalent — twelve years of U.S. small-animal general practice, contributing to coverage of dog and cat insurance, senior pets, and pre-existing conditions.
  • Karen Liu, AINS — Associate in General Insurance, nine years of property-and-casualty specialty lines experience, contributing to plan structure and cost comparison content.
  • Jordan Reyes, RVT — Registered Veterinary Technician with seven years of clinic-floor experience, contributing to wellness, routine care, and puppy/kitten enrollment articles.

Each author’s full bio, credentials, and editorial scope are available on their author archive pages on this site.

What we are not

We are not licensed insurance agents, brokers, attorneys, veterinarians, or financial advisors. Our articles are educational and reflect publicly available industry information, our editorial team’s professional background, and careful reading of policy documents and trade-group publications. Nothing on PetInsureLab constitutes legal, financial, or veterinary advice. For pet medical concerns, consult your veterinarian. For coverage decisions, read the actual policy documents and consult a licensed insurance agent in your state.

How we make money

PetInsureLab is supported by display advertising. We do not accept payment for editorial coverage, we do not promote specific carriers, and we do not run affiliate links. If we ever add affiliate relationships in the future, they will be clearly disclosed in every article that contains them and on this page first.

Editorial standards

Every article follows the editorial process documented on our Editorial Policy page. Coverage decisions, exclusions, waiting periods, and pricing in the U.S. pet insurance market change frequently; our articles aim to reflect current industry norms at the time of publication, and we revisit major articles periodically to keep them aligned with current carrier practice.
